You'll often hear people who have "made it" encourage you to burn the boats, quit your job, and go all in on your side hustle.
The idea is you'll have more time to work on your side hustle and be extra motivated because you don't have a job.
That sounds great in theory, but if you're anything like me, having more time doesn't guarantee you'll get more done.
Parkinson's Law says work will expand to fill the time allotted for its completion, and this has absolutely proven true for me.
In fact, I like building my business alongside my 9-5 because it forces me to use time wisely.
Here's what my current schedule looks like:
4:30 - 5:00 am: Wake up and read scriptures
5:00 - 7:00 am: Work on highest leverage tasks (scripting videos, brainstorming ideas, etc.)
7:00 - 8:00 am: Get ready for the day and leave for work
8:30 am - 4:00 pm: Work my day job
4:30 - 6:30 pm: Dinner and spend time with my wife
6:30 - 7:00 pm: Workout
7:00 - 8:00 pm: Extra work on my side hustle if I can (filming, planning, etc.)
8:00 - 8:30 pm: Write down the highest leverage tasks for the next day and go to bed
Because my schedule is so packed, I have to intentionally schedule time to work on my business, otherwise a) I won't get as much done and b) I will constantly feel like I'm not doing enough.
If my whole day suddenly opens up, I no longer have the pressure of getting in two uninterrupted hours of deep work before going to the office.
That means I wake up later, I spend time lollygagging before I start working, and before I know it I'm working on some other random task that doesn't move the needle.
Having a 9-5 gives me structure.
Now obviously if the goal is to turn your side hustle into your main source of income, you will have to tackle that problem eventually.
But until you're at that point, learn how to use the time you have.
Because you will make more progress with 2 hours of focused work than 12 hours of scattered work.
